What is Copywriting and What Does A Copywriter Do?

One of the most common questions I get asked when I tell people my profession is ‘what does a copywriter do?’ or ‘what is copywriting, exactly?’.

Last week, I met someone who thought I said ‘copyrighter’, which I’m not convinced is the technical name for someone who specialises in copyright. However, copywriting is something altogether different!

What is Copywriting?

The best place to start, I think, is with what copywriting is. Copywriting simply refers to writing copy or text. This could be for Facebook ads, Google ads, marketing campaigns, social media, or on a website.

The reason that I’ll tell you that I’m a copywriter and not just a writer is because I don’t write novels and nor am I a journalist. The term copywriter enables me to differentiate what I do from the traditional concept of being a ‘writer’ who must write articles for the newspaper or entire books. I do neither of these things!

At its core, copywriting involves defining the ideal audience for a brand’s product or service and then writing in a way that captures the attention of that audience. This can be done across many mediums, but the purpose is the same – to spark the interest of the reader.

What Does a Copywriter Do?

As a copywriter, it is my job to help brands communicate more effectively with their customers.

All too often, business owners have deep knowledge of their brand but struggle to share this information in an easily digestible format with their customers. We’ve all seen examples of this – the electrician’s website that leaves you questioning exactly what they offer or an online store that doesn’t convey the benefits of their products. ‘Buy our (insert product here)!’ and you’re left thinking ‘But why should I?’.

I am the person who acts as the interpreter to turn information from corporate-speak or subject matter jargon into something any reader can easily connect with. This helps current and future clients to understand why they should engage with your brand.

As a copywriter, I specialise in blog posts, website content, social media, product descriptions, and more. Wherever you need written text, whether it’s online or in a printed format, I’m here to help. I can translate what you offer into why the customer needs this product or service.
